In case you have been living under a rock this year, themed subscription boxes are now all the rage, and I’ll just direct you to the wiki page to read all about it.
Illumicrate is a book-themed subscription box curated by Daphne, who has established herself as a UK book blogger over at Winged Reviews. It’s a quarterly service, which I must admit is the basis of its appeal for me, since I figure she gets time to really source out which books are coming out to include in the boxes, as well as speaking to various creatives and independent retailers about bookish merchandise.
This is also my first ever subscription box, and I was very impressed with the contents! And so without further ado…
From the website’s FAQ page, Illumicrate does not explicitly mention which type of book it normally includes in the box, only that it will be a newly released, UK edition, along with “a variety of fun things, such as bookmarks, stationery, jewellery, accessories or any other small items that book lovers are sure to enjoy.”1. It does mention that the books will be “a variety of genres”, although I have a strong impression that these will tend to be of the young adult/new adult genre.
If you wanted a closer look at the images, you can click on them to see them in its original size.
These are quotes from Pierce Brown‘s Red Rising trilogy, which I confess that I haven’t read, so I’m not too sure which book these quotes are from, but fans of it would surely like to know these were included in the box. (I hear the books were amazing so I will be getting to it sometime!)
Not too sure who made these; they weren’t specified on the packing list!
Illustrations by Ashley Poston, these are exclusive to Illumicrate, and can be coloured in. Apparently, these are Six of Crows/Grisha-inspired, which, again, I have no clue about, as I haven’t read that particular series by Leigh Bardugo either.
There’s also a code that Illumicrate subscribers can use to have 40% off Ashley’s ebook on bloomsbury.com.
The colouring pencils are (obviously) not included in the box.
Finally, something I know! Haha! I thought these were cute, especially with the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play this year (watch out for my review/thoughts on that). Another exclusive to Illumicrate, these are illustrated by Taratjah, and they’re definitely exclusive as her Society6 shop doesn’t seem to hold any Harry Potter merchandise.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book and box of postcards are not included in the box.
This lovely tote (which means ready/prepare for anything/all things) is due to one of fandoms’ favourite bookworms, Rory Gilmore, of Gilmore Girls. The is yet another exclusive item to Illumicrate, and is designed by Elena of Colorful Geekiness.
And finally a book! The Graces by Laura Eve was coming out in paperback this September, but since this box came to subscribers’ doorsteps early August, this means people got an advanced copy! There’s also a signed plate, temporary tattoos, as well as a letter from the author. The story involves magic and witches, so would fall under the YA paranormal bracket.
And dear me, there’s another book! I’ve heard of Nevernight by Jay Kristoff even before this box, and because of that, have actually acquired the black sprayed edge version from one of the chain bookshops here in the UK before I received the box. Er, so yeah, I have two copies of the book. What to do with the other??
Anyway, along with the book is a matching bookmark, a signed plate, as well as a link to a video from Jay himself.
And there you have it! It was quite fun opening the box, but it was not as fun trying to capture all the items in one shot. Heh.
Let’s have a chat!
